Non-point Source Pollution Banner Activity

By: Susan Wrasmann

Our Missouri Stream Team liked the Non-point Source Pollution banner so much we asked to borrow it for Earth Day at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla. The banner was designed by the Missouri Stream Team Watershed Coalition under the direction of Holly Neill and each watershed association affiliated with MSTWC receives a banner. We borrowed ours from the Mill Creek Watershed Association. We liked the way it looked in our booth but wanted to draw attention to its message and make up a fun activity for the children who stopped at the booth.

Holly provided us with the banner artwork for each of the topics concerning ways to prevent pollutants from entering storm drains leading to local waterways. We printed stickers on 2” X 2” square Avery labels, then cut them out and put them in a basket. When groups of children stopped at the booth we invited them to “play the sticker game.” Each child drew a sticker from the basket and matched the picture on the sticker with the one on the banner. We asked them to read the curvy letters under their picture and tell how it would help keep the water in our streams clean. When they went away all the children in their group had learned something about each topic.

That is a great idea! What a wonderful way to make the banner interactive – we may have to try something like this!
