Missouri Clean Marina Program

Posted in: Spotlight- Feb 07, 2018 No Comments

Three years ago Stream Teams United teamed up with Ozarks Water Watch to form the Missouri Clean Marina program. This is a voluntary, incentive-based program that encourages marina operators and recreational boaters to protect water quality by engaging in environmentally sound operating and maintenance procedures. This goal of this program is to improve and protect the water quality of Missouri Lakes. The marina and boating industry depends on clean waters for their continued success. Becoming a Missouri Clean Marina allows the marina to publicly demonstrate they are taking actions in being good stewards of water quality. The inaugural year brought in eleven marinas: Table Rock State Park, Chateau on the Lake, Indian Point, Rock Lake, Campbell Point, Port of Kimberling, Long Creek, Bent Hook, Cape Fair, Hideaway and Fall Creek Marina.

This past fall Ronna Haxby (Ozarks Water Watch) and Brooke Widmar (Stream Teams United) visited the current clean marinas for renewal inspections to make sure the facility was still in compliance, and to restock informational signs, flags and stickers. Renewal inspections were also an opportunity for marinas to showcase what other environmental practices have been put in place over the past three years.

There are currently marinas represented on Table Rock Lake and Lake Tanyecomo – but as a state-wide program, Missouri Clean Marina champions are needed on more lakes throughout Missouri. For more information about Missouri Clean Marina, visit mocleanmarina.org.
